
The University of Rochester’s Department of English, in collaboration with the Memorial Art Gallery (MAG), is proud to announce that artist G. Peter Jemison has been selected as the recipient of the 2024 Lillian Fairchild Award. This prestigious honor recognizes Jemison’s outstanding contributions to the arts and will be presented on Monday, April 7, (5:00–7:00 pm) at the Memorial Art Gallery. The evening’s celebration will start with a wine reception in the Vanden Brul Pavilion at 5:00 pm, followed by the award presentation and a talk by Jemison at 6:00 pm in the Auditorium. This event is free and open to the public, registration is required by Sunday, March 23.

About G. Peter Jemison
A distinguished artist, educator, and author, G. Peter Jemison is a member of the Heron Clan from the Cattaraugus Territory, Seneca Nation. His work is in the collections of major institutions including the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac in Paris. MAG is proud to hold several of his works in its collection and hosted a solo exhibition of his art, To Help People See, in 2021. Jemison’s piece, Crow in the Shadow, will be on display in MAG’s introductory gallery to mark the occasion.
About the Lillian Fairchild Award
Established in 1924 by University of Rochester Professor Herman L. Fairchild, the Lillian Fairchild Award honors creative excellence in memory of his daughter, Lillian, an artist who passed away at age 32. The award is given annually to a Rochester-area resident who has produced “the most meritorious and praiseworthy creation of art, poetry, or literature of the imagination” in the previous year.
Past recipients include legendary choreographer Garth Fagan, renowned sculptor Albert Paley, and Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Anthony Hecht.
