This course explores India ink and the dynamic possibilities of combining ink dip-pen and brush techniques with watercolor. We will master the mechanics of ink and metal nib work, gaining familiarity with the materials and essential methods to achieve fluidity of line, line variation, hatching, texture, and controlled mark-making. We will integrate transparent watercolor washes to build depth and color harmony, drawing on approaches found across the lineage of medieval and Renaissance drawings up through contemporary art and illustration. Students will also experiment with reed, bamboo, and other alternative mark-making tools, in addition to a range of wet media ink techniques, including fluid ink brush painting and tonal washes, and experience the differing behaviors of watercolor versus colored inks. Find creative direction through demonstrations, guided exercises, and free exploration in a supportive environment. Suitable for all levels of ink and watercolor experience; some foundation in basic drawing techniques preferred.
