Every two years, Rochester’s longest-running juried exhibition showcases work by artists from western and central New York.
This year’s Finger Lakes features 100 works by 49 artists—including 36 who are new to the show. They were chosen from a field of 885 entries by 337 artists by jurors Phil Alexandre of Alexandre Gallery, New York, and John D. Spiak, curator, Arizona State University Art Museum, and director designate, Grand Central Art Center, Santa Ana, CA.
The exhibition is particularly strong in prints, drawings and photographs, but also includes paintings, ceramics, sculptures, mixed media works and video. And it’s nearly triple the size of the 2007 and 2009 shows—a response to visitor requests that Finger Lakes present a broader cross-section of the region.
This year, artists competed for nine cash prizes totaling more than $4,000. These include the $1,000 Memorial Art Gallery Award, selected by the jurors, and the $500 Harris Popular Vote award, which is being voted by visitors during the first two weeks of the show. Jurors’ awards were announced July 23 at the opening party, and the popular vote winner was announced August 8.
