Lithuanian-born artist Alfonsas Dargis arrived in Rochester in 1951, ready to resume his artistic career following the war that had devastated his homeland. A decade later, he was honored with the University of Rochester’s Lillian Fairchild Award, given annually in recognition of an artist’s creative output, as well as the Jurors’ Award at the Rochester-Finger Lakes Exhibition.
Alternately spirited and meditative, realistic and elusive, Dargis’s distinctive work combines the directness of Lithuanian folk art and the abstraction of mid-century Modernism. This exhibition brings together nearly 30 paintings and prints from the Gallery’s collection.
