Sol LeWitt: Art Installation

November 15-December 1, 2022
Vanden Brul Pavilion

Have you ever wanted to see a work of art get installed? Now’s your chance! A major work of Conceptual art, one of Sol LeWitt’s iconic “Wall Drawings,” has been generously gifted to MAG. It will be rendered directly on a wall in the Vanden Brul Pavilion by a representative of the LeWitt Estate and an artist from the Rochester community. Wall Drawing #957: Form Derived from a Cube will be installed between November 15 and December 1, with a break from November 22 to November 26. Visit MAG during the installation period to watch the mural-scale drawing emerge!

Day 11 Installation

Sol LeWitt was a leading figure of Minimalism and a pioneer of Conceptual art. Wall Drawing #957: Form Derived from a Cube is an iconic example of LeWitt’s career-long exploration of his signature Wall Drawing format. These works of Conceptual art exist in principle as certificates of authenticity signed by the artist. MAG owns the work of art, which is to say it owns the certificate of authenticity. This gives MAG the right to install it in one location. Each Wall Drawing certificate includes written instructions for how to execute the work, which must be done in coordination with the LeWitt Estate.

The installation will be accessible to the public for free during open hours. After, the Wall Drawing will remain on long-term display as a new centerpiece of MAG’s collection of Minimalist and Conceptual art.
