Not all works of art are created to last. Sand mandalas were created by Buddhist monks to be temporary on purpose. The process is meditative, and the temporary nature of the art helps us practice letting go. In this introductory course, you’ll learn the skills and practice of an ancient art form. Using only grains of colorful sand, you’ll learn to create patterns, texture, images from nature, and even portraits-all made of sand. You’ll also gain an appreciation for the philosophy and cultures of the Buddhists of Tibet and Hindus of India and Nepal, who still create impermanent sand paintings today.
