SUMMARY:Mark Dion: Wunderkammer and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Mark Dion\, Cabinet of Marine Debris\, 2014\, cabinet; wood\, glass\, metal\, paint; assorted marine debris; plastic\, rope. Courtesy the artist and Tanya Bonakdar Gallery\, New York / Los Angeles \n\nJoin globally recognized contemporary American artist Mark Dion as he speaks on his work\, which mimics historical or scientific displays pointing to environmental degradation and the current global biodiversity crisis as well as the broader subjective nature of truth. Through his work\, he investigates ways knowledge is constructed\, classified\, and presented\, revealing the cultural and ideological assumptions behind institutional authority and colonial collecting practices. \nThis talk is part of “Entering the Wunderkammer\,” a series of events and activities that brings together students\, artists and curators to engage with the wide range of topics raised by “cabinets of curiosity.” These precursors to modern museums\, first popularized in Renaissance Europe\, will be the pivot point for lectures and workshops that will interrogate curation as art\, art as research\, and display as cultural language. \nRegistration Details\nFor questions about this program\, please contact Chiyo Ueyama at cueyama@mag.rochester.edu. Ticket includes museum admission. \n\nThis program is co-sponsored by the Humanities Center at the University of Rochester\, the Department of Art & Art History\, the Memorial Art Gallery\, the Department of Biology\, the Department of History\, and the Graduate Program in Visual and Cultural Studies.
