SUMMARY:Art Lover's Tour: Day Trip to Ithaca
DESCRIPTION:Spring into the new season with us! \nWe are traveling south to Ithaca aboard a comfortable coach. Our departure from the MAG rear parking lot is scheduled for 7:45 a.m. to visit Cornell University’s Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art. The Johnson Museum is itself an architectural masterpiece\, designed by award-winning architect I. M. Pei. Its modern design features striking angles that are beautifully complemented by its scenic\, wooded hillside setting. \nOur first activity will be a guided tour highlighting a selection of the museum’s extensive collection\, which spans centuries and includes artworks from various cultures worldwide. Currently\, there is a special exhibition featuring contemporary artist Alexis Rockman’s Naples: Course of Empire\, inspired by Thomas Cole’s nineteenth-century cycle The Course of Empire. Executed in Rockman’s signature style of history painting\, the works examine the long and fraught relationship between human civilization and the natural world. \nFollowing the museum visit\, we will dine at one of Cornell’s newest dining facilities in Toni Morrison Hall. Guests can choose from a variety of international cuisine stations\, including Kosher and Halal options\, and enjoy some homemade Cornell Dairy Ice Cream. Participants may select their meal based on personal preference and budget. \nAfter lunch\, we will visit the Cornell Botanic Gardens. Starting at the Nevin Welcome Center—which features exhibits and a gift shop—we will enjoy a one-hour guided walking tour with garden staff. We anticipate the Mundy Wildflower Garden to be especially vibrant\, with lush grasses and blooming trees signaling the arrival of spring. \nFrom the gardens\, we will proceed to visit local artist Barbara Mink at her private studio. There\, we will view her vibrant abstract paintings and engage in a discussion about her artistic style\, use of color\, and the expressive qualities of her work. For more information about her background and artwork\, please visit buffalosocietyofartists.org/member/barbara-mink. \nFinally\, we will relax during the return trip through the Finger Lakes\, sharing conversations\, refreshments\, and light snacks. We expect to arrive back at the MAG parking lot by approximately 7:15 p.m. \n\nRegistration ends on Thursday\, April 30\, at 7:30 pm. For questions about this event\, please email magcouncil@mag.rochester.edu. \nOur ART LOVER’S tours are organized and sponsored by the MAG Council to benefit MAG and are open to all interested travelers. \nAnyone unable to attend a MAG Council Art Tour must make their request for a refund by contacting the MAG Council Office prior to the event registration deadline. For international/overnight tour refunds\, the policy of the managing travel agency will take precedence. \nIf it is necessary for the MAG Council to cancel an Art Lover’s Tour\, all payments made will be refunded in full.
