Spring 2011: Meet the Burbanks

Mary and Gideon Burbank portraits from the 1860sNear the Grand Gallery, see portraits from the 1860s of Rochester mill owner Gideon Burbank, who endowed a philosophy chair at the new University of Rochester, and his wife, Mary. Painted by William Cogswell, the two portraits (at left)—along with Kathleen McEnery Cunningham’s painting Colette (which hangs nearby) and portraits of the Hiram Dixon family—are among works recently conserved under a Henry Luce Foundation grant.
