The Fairport Library building was constructed under the WPA and is now home to the Fairport Historical Museum of the Perinton Historical Society. When Peters received the commission in 1938 to paint a mural for the building, it was brand new. Fairport was Peters’ home town; his chosen subject matter was the familiar agricultural lifestyle of people in the region as it was affected by the Erie Canal.
