Alice Chen

Painting

Alice Chen has taught Asian Brush Painting at the Creative Workshop since 2000. She teaches traditional Asian techniques and philosophy combined with an emphasis on individual interests to help each student cultivate a distinctive style.

Before becoming a professional artist in Asian brush painting and calligraphy almost two decades ago, Alice studied horticulture and mycology (mushrooms and other fungi) at Imperial College of London and other schools. Following her scientific education, She went through the rigorous training system for artists in traditional Chinese brush painting. She was taught by prominent masters such as Professor Su Fung-nan and Professor Wu Cheng-Yen.

In her own work Alice aims to go beyond realism, intending to paint the total sensitivity, quality and vision of her experience. She often blends ideas from the East and West, always with humor and joy.

Alice’s paintings can be viewed at Gallery 821 at Schoen Place in Pittsford and at Olde Country Picture Framers in Canandaigua. In 2010, she will have an exhibition of her work at Allegheny College in Pennsylvania and participate again in the Bonsai National exhibition.
