Lockport arts patron Charles Rand Penney, who assembled an eclectic collection of more than 100,000 works over a decades-long career, died August 1, 2010. Penney is best known for his landmark 1991 gift of more than 1,000 artworks, which tranformed Buffalo’s Burchfield Art Center (today the Burchfield Penney Art Center).
The Memorial Art Gallery has also been the beneficiary of Penney’s generosity. In the 1970s, he transferred an important body of contemporary works—including prints, drawings, watercolors and sculpture—to the Gallery’s collection. Among these are David Smith’s 1952 sculpture Big Diamond and Beverly Pepper’s Vertical Ventaglio (1967–68).
