Kwanzaa Family Day

Kwanzaa Family Day

Thursday, December 29, 2016, noon to 5 pm
There are few living people who can say they created a holiday celebrated by millions of people. Maulana Karenga, a professor of Africana studies at California State University in Long Beach, created Kwanzaa in 1966 and remains its most prominent advocate.

As he explained it, Kwanzaa transcends African culture to celebrate the universal: “the celebration of Kwanzaa is about embracing ethical principles and values … so the goodness of the world can be shared and enjoyed by us and everyone.”

Each of Kwanzaa’s seven days is dedicated to one principle, named in Swahili. Translated, they are: unity; self-determination; collective work and responsibility; cooperative economics; purpose; creativity; and faith.
