Fred Lipp

Fred (aka Fritz) Lipp taught Advanced Painting for more than 40 years at the Creative Workshop, where he helped build a vibrant and supportive community of painters. Fred taught painting as a visual adventure emphasizing careful observation and analysis while giving students thoughtful advice. His students report gaining much more than painting advice as Fred’s input helped them in a wide variety of ways. As Robert Ross shared, “ He lifted my spirit every darn day”. Longtime student Paul Dodd has published often about Fred on his blog, Popwars.

Fred passed away June 7, 2015. More information about a planned celebration of Fred’s life is expected in the June 21, 2015 Democrat and Chronicle.

Fred earned an MFA at Rochester Institute of Technology and a BA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He also attended the University of Illinois, University of Chicago, and Yale University Music and Art Program.

Fred’s work was included in several solo exhibitions and numerous national group shows. His sculpture commissions are installed at RIT and Rochester General Hospital, and his work is also held in collections including the Memorial Art Gallery, Trenton State College, RIT and Marine Midland Bank. He retired as a professor at the RIT’s College of Imaging Arts and Sciences.
