Baroque trumpet virtuoso Brian Shaw joins the Publick Musick strings in this program centered on music from Bologna, whose magnificent San Petronio Basilica was a major European center of musical innovation in the late 1600s. Composers there such as Giuseppe Torelli spearheaded the development of the instrumental concerto, but also wrote wonderful music for smaller ensembles that is much more rarely heard today. Arcangelo Corelli, though mostly active in Rome, received his early training in Bologna, and indeed went by the nickname "Il Bolognese." His sole surviving Sonata for Trumpet and Strings will be on the program.
