Event: Lecture on Minimal Art with Dr. Cathleen Chaffee

Location: Memorial Art Gallery

Date: Sunday, June 4, 2017

Time: 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM

Minimal Mostly at Deborah Ronnen Fine Art will bring to Rochester work by world renown artists: Anni Albers, Josef Albers, Carmen Herrera, Ellsworth Kelly, Sol LeWitt, Agnes Martin, and Frank Stella. These “Masters of Minimal” are artists who developed and formalized the concepts of minimal art.

At MAG, join us for a lecture, Minimalism: Spare and Shocking Developments in Abstraction with Dr. Cathleen Chaffee, Senior Curator at the Albright Knox Art Gallery. She will explore this period of development.

Dr. Chaffee joined the Albright Knox in January 2014. Prior to coming to western New York, Chaffee was Horace W. Goldsmith Assistant Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Yale University Art Gallery from 2010–14, and previously held curatorial positions at the Museum of Modern Art and the Cleveland Museum of Art. Among her exhibitions at Yale were Still Life: 1970s Photorealism and Radical Visions and Practically Applied: Women’s Innovations in Abstraction, 1915–1937.
Chaffee received her Ph.D. from the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University in 2013 and was awarded a 2008 Fulbright Fellowship to Belgium for research on her dissertation, Décors: Marcel Broodthaers’s Late Exhibition Practice 1974–75. She received her master’s degree from the Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London, and completed undergraduate studies at Ithaca College.
Chaffee has organized many exhibitions on artists such as Clyfford Still, Mark Bradford, Erin Shirreff, and Eija-Liisa Ahtila. Her mid-career survey of the work of Joe Bradley will open this June. Chaffee’s writing has been published in magazines such as ArtForum, Frieze, Contemporary, Art Asia Pacific, Mousse, Tema Celeste, and Manifesta Journal.

In conjunction with this talk, MAG will be partnering with Deborah Ronnen Fine Art, as well as other NOTA neighbors to enrich and celebrate the conversation. Learn more
