MAGart 2.0

In 2012, the Memorial Art Gallery became the first Rochester museum to launch an mobile app for visitors. The latest version of the free app — titled MAGart 2.0 — explores the entire Gallery—upstairs, downstairs and throughout Centennial Sculpture Park—through a greatly expanded number of objects (138 and counting). Of these, 29 have audio commentary by director Grant Holcomb and other staff members.

MAGart 2.0 allows smartphone and tablet users to search these objects by culture, time period or title; get in-depth information about them; and set up a customized set.

Among MAGart’s features are “hot spots,” which were developed specially for the Gallery. When selected, these translucent red dots reveal additional facts about a highlighted artwork.

Other features include:

• video links
• a “Look and Do” section with conversation starters and activities for the whole family
• sections on the history and architecture of the Gallery
• “collection connections” linking objects in different areas of the museum
• visitor information including floor plans, museum hours, admission fees and exhibitions
• links to the Gallery Store and Max at the Gallery restaurant

MAGart 2.0 is made possible by a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services. Additional support is provided by the Max and Marian Farash Charitable Foundation and Helen H. Berkeley. It was developed by Meridianapps.com, which has also created apps for the American Museum of Natural History and the Art Institute of Chicago.
